Damascus, SANA-The first stage of the Scientific Olympiad for Teachers’ tests began on Sunday with the participation of 850 teachers in four centers in Damascus, Homs, Aleppo and Lattakia provinces.
The competition is organized by the National Commission for the Syrian Science Olympiad in cooperation with the Ministry of Education.
Minister Hazwan al-Wazz affirmed in a press statement the importance of the Scientific Olympiad for Teachers in creating a staff of well-qualified teachers and encouraging them to develop their abilities and identify the training needs within an ambitious vision which will lead to develop a spirit of positive competition between them and strengthen the Olympiad culture.
For his part, Chairman of the National Commission for the Syrian Science Olympiad Imad al- Azab said that the Olympiad aims at highlighting the talented persons in various disciplines and investing their talents in the appropriate field of their abilities as well as to develop the sustainable professional development for teachers.
For his part, Rector of Damascus University Mohammad Hassan al-Kurdi said that the University is seeking to spread the Olympiad experience in all its faculties which will contribute to develop the abilities of the students, adding that the results of the Olympiad’s tests will help the University develop its curricula.
The first stage tests are in the subjects of math, physics, chemistry, biology and IT, and the top teachers will be qualified for the second stage and then to the final stage which will be in Damascus city.
In 2014, the first competition for teachers was held as an experiment and it involved 340 teachers from Damascus, Damascus Countryside, Lattakia and Tartous. While in 2015, the Olympiad became official and around 700 teachers from all provinces took part in it.
