India grants 1,000 academic scholarships to Syrian students

New Delhi, SANA- The Indian government announced it has provided 1,000 scholarships to Syrian students seeking to study in India in various fields, as part of India’s contribution to helping Syria rebuild and rehabilitate its educational cadres.

Indian Minister of State for External Affairs Mubashir Javed Akbar said that these scholarships are part of a program presented by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to help Syria, stressing that it is the first of its kind offered by India to a foreign country.

Akbar’s remarks came during a luncheon held in honor of Minister of Higher Education Atef Naddaf in New Delhi.

Syria has been able to triumph over terrorism thanks to the steadfastness of its people, army and leadership and their unity in defending their homeland, the Indian Minister said.

Naddaf, in turn, expressed Syria’s appreciation for the honorable positions of the Indian government in supporting Syria, stressing the importance of enhancing cooperation between Syrian and Indian universities.

He also noted that scholarships have been granted to Indian students wishing to study Arabic, history and other specialties.
